Ballyliffin Golf Club AGM

Ballyliffin Golf Club’s 62nd AGM will take place in the golf club on Sunday, December 9 at 6pm. The Ballyliffin golf club road will be closed for bridge widening from Monday, December 10 – Wednesday, December 12 inclusive. The Golf pro shop sale starts December 1.

 

25 Card Drives

The 25 card drives continue in the Ballyliffin Hotel on Monday evenings in aid of the Sheepdog Association, in Cloontagh school on Tuesday evenings in aid of the parents association, and also in McFeeley’s bar on Thursday evenings

 

Christmas Swim

The 10th Annual Swim at Leenan Beach will take place on Christmas morning at 10am in aid of the Children’s Ward and Nursery at Letterkenny Hospital and the Donegal Down’s Syndrome Association. Table Quiz

Urris GAA will be holding a table quiz in the Rusty Nail on Friday evenings starting on December 7. Every week there will be a ticket for the club’s development draw on offer to the winning team. Summer school magazine

The McGlinchey Summer School magazine – It’s us they’re thinking about, No 10 – based on this year’s theme “Inishowen”: 1607 and all that…….” is being edited at present and will be available in March 2008. This tenth issue, the last in the present series, will complete a valuable record of local history and heritage of Clonmany and Inishowen. An absent family member or friend might appreciate a copy this Christmas. Copies of No. 9 and some earlier issues are still available in Caitríona’s Newsagent and other local shops.

 

Child Protection Course

Any adult who hopes to be involved in the management of youth/school teams or the supervision of any underage activities – soccer, gaelic, athletics, national school teams, youth club activities etc is required to hold a Child Protection Certificate. An opportunity for anyone interested in acquiring such a certificate is due to be held in St. Brigid’s Youth Club on Tuesday, December 11 at 7pm. The entire course will be delivered on the night. There was no jackpot winner for the lotto drawn on November 18. The twenty euro winners were Caoimhe Ruddy, Culdaff, Charlie McCurdy, Culdaff and Damien Harkin, Drumfries. Next week, the jackpot is now 2600 euro. The draw will take place in McGuinness’ on Sunday night.

Music Project Workshop
The Ninth Annual Inishowen Traditional music project workshop will be held in Glengad National School and Glengad Community Centre, on November 24th and 25th.This project to date has brought over 60 tutors from all over Ireland to spend the weekend in Inishowen passing on their expertise and love of the music.

Sympathy
The death took place last week of Freddie Smith, Crehennan. Freddie, who was 74 years old, died after a lengthy illness at Carndonagh Community Hospital. He was a shirtcutter by trade and when he gave that up he was called on by anyone who wanted electrical work, plumbing, building or carpentry work undertaken. He was one of the original promoters of the Quigley’s Point Water Scheme and was a great community activist. He was very well known and highly respected and was always there to help no matter what. He will be sadly missed and always remembered by everyone who knew him. Culmore Trinity Church was crowded for his funeral service which was conducted by the Rev Gloria Penwell. The reader was William Bredin and the beautiful music was provided by Mrs Marion Kee. Deepest sympathy is offered to Freddie’s wife, Lily, the family circle and many friends. May he rest in peace.

AWARE
AWARE, Helping to defeat depression and prevent suicide. AWARE is a national voluntary organisation which has, since its inception in 1985, been working to bring support to those who are affected by depression and their friends and families. It offers a range of services including a lo-call helpline (1890 303 30200 a schools awareness programme, talks, public lectures and a number of support groups throughout Ireland. Sympathy
The sad and untimely death took place recently of Patsy Duffy, Cullinean, Redcastle. Patsy, who was 64 years old, died in Galway Hospital after a brief illness.A farmer, he had lived all his life in Cullinean. He was a pleasant and modest man and everyone’s friend. His passing will be sadly missed by all who knew him.The very high esteem in which Patsy was held was evident by the large numbers who attended his wake and funeral which took place to St Columba’s Church, Drung where Requiem Mass was celebrated by Fr Mailey. The offertory gifts were presented by his four children Sinead, Cathal, Pauric and Breedge and the beautiful music and singing was provided by Neil McLaughin. Internment took place in the adjoining cemetary. Deepest sympathy is offered to Patsy’s wife Sarah, his children Sinead, Cathal, Pauric and Breedge, to his sister Sadie, Carrickmore, Co Tyrone, brother Francis and wife Betty, Greencastle, nephews and family circle and his many friends, may he rest in peace

Development Meeting

A meeting will take place in Glengad Community Centre on Tuesday May 29th at 8:30pm to discuss a proposed jetty at Portsalon Pier. Anyone interested  in the development is very welcome to attend.

Volunteers wanted

Thanks
A recent second hand sale in Inishowen raised more than E5000 for a leading charity. The event was organised by Culdaff woman Ellen McDermott and was a huge success. The amount raised was E5134. Ellen wishes to thank everyone who helped organise and supported the sale.

Drama Project
A new drama project will begin in Inishowen. Moville and District Family Resource Centre will run the project for 12 days from the 25th June to 11th July. The project is aimed at young people over the age of 14 years. The initiative id free but places are limited. Dinner Dance
Craigtown National School Dinner Dance to mark the retirement of Kay Conaghan will take place in the Ballyliffen Hotel on Friday 29th June. Music by Hugh P and Shunie. Tickets are priced at 25 euro each and are available from any committee member or contact Maire on 086398869

Sympathy
Widespread sympathy was evoked by the death which took place in Altnagelvin Hospital, Derry of James O’Kane, Tirscullion, Culdaff. The deceased, who was in his early nineties, was a well known and highly respected member of the local community. He will be keenly missed by all who knew him. His funeral to St Mary’s Church, Bocan was large and
representative. Requiem Mass was celebrated by his grand nephew Fr Paddy O’Kane, assisted by Fr Jim McGonagle and Fr Joseph Morris who also officiated at the graveside in the adjoining cemetary. Deep sympathy is extended to his brother Dominic and sister Mary, his grandnephews and grandnieces and the wider family circle. May his soul rest in peace.

Course
Carndonagh Community School Post Leaving Certificate Department is offering a course in Business Administration and tourism in the academic year 07/08 (FETAC) Level 5. The course consists of modules in Administration Word and Text Processing, Accounting Speadsheets, Databases and Communications, Work Placement in local business firms is also included. PLC students may also repeat Leaving Certificate maths while doing this course. Mature students can also apply.Application forms are available by phoning the school on 9374260

First Holy Communion
Twenty three children from the two parish schools received their First Holy Communion at 11am Mass in St Mary’s Church, Bocan on Saturday 26th May. They were- Scoil Mhuire, Gleneely; Nathan McLaughlin, Gavin McElhinney, Shauna Harkin, Aaron McLaughlin, Shannon McLaughlin, Tamara Duffy, Darragh Folan, Amy Donnelly and Conor Smith. Congratulations to all who made their First Holy Communion.

Golf Society Trip
Members of the McGuinness Bar Golf Society are undertaking their first trip abroad when they head to Troon in Scotland on Saturday 2nd June with the bus departing the village at 4am to catch the 7am ferry to Troom. Golf starts with a round at 2pm before playing a different course on Sunday and in the afternoon. Members return on Monday and the presentaions will take place immediately on return. Total cost of the trip is £177 stg and this must be paid to Bernard McGuinness without delay.

Disco
Carndonagh Boxing Club is holding an end of term school disco in the Tul na Ri on Friday 1st June, Under 12’s from 7:30 to 9pm. Under 16’s 9:15 to 11pm. Music by DJ Steve. Admission is  5 euro/ All children to be collected immediately afterwards.

Sports Day
Redcastle Sports Day is Sunday 3rd June, commencing at 2pm sharp. All the usual track and field events, Bouncy Castle, Fun Slide,a car boot sale. A fortune teller, Jim Quinn  will also be in attendance. A fun day for all.
