League Cup kicks off new season
Posted online: Aug 17th, 2010
The new Inishowen league season gets underway this weekend with games scheduled for both Friday and Sunday in the league cup kindly sponsored by William Grant. As usual there are some fascinating clashes down for decision and group C is the proverbial group of death with QPS, Clonmany and Moville all pitted together with Sea Rovers. However in a change to the competition there will be two teams qualifying for the quarter finals which should see all groups go down to the last game.Darren Bredin remains in charge of Moville and Terry McColgan has been joined by Paul Hegarty at the Point. But Clonmany have Shaun Devlin returned at the helm while Peter O’Neill is in charge of Sea Rovers. It is a tough group to call but Moville could come out on top here. In group A there are five teams and all eyes will be on Aileach FC after the managerial merry go round saw Brian Bell installed as their new manager.Drawn with four first division teams Gleneely, Greencastle, Illies and Buncrana it will be a major surprise if they do not top the group. John McGonigle & Brian Harris have taken over at Gleneely while Eunan McDaid has taken a player manager role at Greencastle. In Illies Paul Doherty remains as does Tony O’Loughlin in Buncrana.Group B sees Glengad under Liam McClean, newly promoted Carn under Dermot Coyle, Cockhill with Michael McLaughlin back in charge and Dunree under Stephen Doherty clash where the opening fixtures sees two local Derbies. Glengad must be favourites to claim top spot but the second spot is really up for grabs with perhaps Carn emerging. The final group sees Rasheney, Culdaff , Carrowmena and Redcastle lock horns with Redcastle the only club with a new manager in John Logue. Many observers will watch closely how Redcastle cope with the loss of Mr Bell and some of the players they have had for a few seasons now. With three premier division teams this is also a tough group which could go either way.
