Concern at illegal dumping in Carn

Donegal County Council has been called on to review its strategy on dumping, recycling and charging.

The call was made at the first meeting of 2010 of the Carndonagh Community and Rural Development Company (CCRDC) which heard there had been a “mark deterioration” in the cleanliness of the streets in the town since the retirement of the local council employee responsible for street cleaning.

Speaking at the meeting in the offices of the Inishowen Development Partnership, CCRDC chairperson, Raymond Doherty, also expressed anger at the amount of illegal dumping taking place in the Carndonagh area.

Mr. Doherty revealed there had been “numerous complaints” from members of the public and the group intended to raise the matter with the County Council “as a matter of urgency.”

Mr. Doherty said illegal dumping and backyard burning had increased since the imposition last year of charges at the  Recycling Centre in the town.

He added: “It is such a pity a facility which was one of the best in Ireland and had succeeded in educating the local community in the merits of recycling has now become an expensive and underutilised facility with the side effects previously mentioned. Perhaps the Council should review its strategy on dumping, recycling and charging.”
