Buncrana Hearts keep signs for Derry City
Buncrana goalkeeper Rory Kelly has signed amateur terms with Derry City FC.
The 18 year-old, formerly of Buncrana Hearts, will serve as understudy to first choice netminder Gerard Doherty.
Kelly, a media student at the North West Regional College who has had trials with Coventry City FC, is delighted with the move.
“When I got the trial with Coventry I gave it my best shot but unfortunately it didn’t work out. At least now something has come of it. I trained hard on my own and got noticed.”
Derry City are currently on a rebuilding mission following the turmoil at the club in recent months. But Rory gave his backing to the the new setup as the club prepares for life in the League of Ireland First Division.
“I think Stephen Kenny has a real ‘hands on’ approach and he makes everyone feel at ease.”
The young goalkeeper is impressed with his new team mate’s approach in training and he hopes the move will help his international aspirations.
“They’re great, a good group of players, and good, hard workers.
“I hope to get a Republic of Ireland college’s call-up when I start University in 2011. The experience I will gain training with Derry will be important in helping to achieve that aim.”
