The removal of the old molasses tank which has been a prominent feature at Buncrana pier has been warmly welcomed.
The 50 ft tall tank, thought to be last remaining structure of its kind in Inishowen, has been dismantled. There had been numerous calls for its removal amid claims it was an “eyesore” and created a negative image to tourists entering the town.Councillor Dermot McLaughlin, who vigorously campaigned for its removal, said he was “delighted”.He said: “It was a real disadvantage to the area.“The Shore Front area has so much potential and a lot of development has gone on there with the Inishowen Gateway Hotel, the Drift Inn, the GAA grounds, the leisure centre  and now the relocating of the council gardeners to the area.“The Shore Front and playground was absolutely packed out with people enjoying the good weather over the Bank Holiday weekend. “There also seems to be a bit of dredging going on at the pier at the minute.“Hopefully this is the first step in tidying up and promoting that whole area.“Buncrana is very fortunate to have the Shore Front. I’m delighted that the tank has finally been removed.”
